Shopify Plan Fees in Canada

The monthly subscription is the one cost every Shopify store pays.

Most new stores start on Basic. Higher plans come with lower card rates and more features, so moving up makes sense once your sales are high enough that the lower rates and the features you need are worth the extra subscription.

Payment Processing Fees

You pay these on every order, so they matter more as you grow.

Why most Canadian stores use Shopify Payments

With a third-party provider you pay that provider's rate and Shopify's extra fee of up to 2%. Unless you need a specific gateway, Shopify Payments is usually the cheaper option. Compare it with WooCommerce's payment options in our guide to WooCommerce vs Shopify for Canadian stores.

Themes, Apps and a Domain

The costs that vary the most from store to store.

Themes

The Shopify Theme Store has free themes and paid ones. A paid theme is a one-time purchase. A custom theme is built for your store by a developer, which costs more up front but means the store does exactly what you need without stacking apps to change the design.

Apps

Apps add features Shopify does not include, such as reviews, subscriptions, bundles or wholesale pricing. Many charge a monthly fee, and they add up quietly. Before launch, list every app you plan to use and its monthly price. After launch, remove apps you have stopped using, since some can leave code behind in the theme.

Domain and email

You need your own domain, bought through Shopify or another registrar, and usually a separate business email service. Register the domain in your business name. Our guide on owning your domain explains how.

GST/HST on Your Shopify Sales

Not a Shopify fee, but a cost you have to plan for.

  • The $30,000 small supplier threshold. You must register for GST/HST once your taxable sales go over $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or across four consecutive calendar quarters. Below that you are a small supplier and registration is optional (CRA guide RC4022).
  • The rate depends on the delivery province. An order delivered in Ontario is charged 13% HST. Orders delivered to other provinces are charged that province's rate (CRA: which rate to charge).
  • Shopify can calculate it. Shopify works out tax at checkout once your tax settings and registrations are entered. Check them with your accountant before launch.

Rules and rates change, and provinces with PST have their own registration rules. Confirm your situation with an accountant.

What a Professional Build Costs

The one-time cost of getting the store designed, built and launched.

Our websites start from $2,500, and online stores cost more. What decides the price is the design (a stock theme set up for your brand, or a custom theme), how many products need adding and organizing, which apps and integrations you need, and whether you need branding first. You get a fixed, itemized quote after a free consultation, before any work begins. More on this in how much a website costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest Shopify plan in Canada?

Of the main plans on Shopify's Canadian pricing page, Basic is the cheapest: $49 CAD a month billed monthly, or $37 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026. Shopify sometimes runs introductory offers for new stores, so check the pricing page when you sign up.

Does Shopify charge transaction fees in Canada?

If you use Shopify Payments you pay card processing rates, starting at 2.8% + 30¢ CAD for online domestic cards on Basic, and no extra transaction fee. If you use a third-party payment provider instead, Shopify adds its own fee on top of the provider's: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.

Are Shopify prices in Canadian dollars?

Yes. Shopify's Canadian pricing page lists plan prices and Shopify Payments rates in CAD.

Do I have to charge HST on my Shopify sales?

Once your taxable sales go over $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters, you are no longer a small supplier and must register for GST/HST. The rate you charge generally depends on the province where the order is delivered, for example 13% HST in Ontario. Shopify can calculate tax at checkout, but ask your accountant to confirm your obligations.

How much does it cost to have a Shopify store built?

Our websites start from $2,500, and online stores cost more depending on the design, number of products, apps and custom features. After a free consultation you get a fixed, itemized quote before any work begins. See our Shopify development service.

Do Shopify stores need maintenance?

Less than a self-hosted store, because Shopify updates and hosts the platform. Themes, apps and content still need looking after: apps change, theme code can conflict with them, and products and promotions need updating. Our maintenance plans cover Shopify and are $149, $299 or $599 a month. See also Shopify maintenance.
