Side by side
- Time to results: Ads, same day. SEO, three to twelve months; see how long SEO takes.
- Cost model: Ads, pay per click, with costs for competitive local terms often $5 to $50 or more a click. SEO, pay for work (your time or a provider's) regardless of clicks; see how much SEO costs in Canada.
- What happens when you stop: Ads traffic ends instantly. SEO traffic continues, declining slowly if the site is neglected.
- Trust: many people skip the sponsored results; organic results get the majority of clicks for most searches.
- Control: Ads let you choose exact searches, locations, hours and landing pages. SEO is earned; you influence it but do not control it.
When ads make more sense
A new business that needs calls this month. A seasonal push. A service with an urgent search behind it ('emergency plumber', 'same-day bail bonds'), where being at the very top right now wins the job. Testing whether a new service draws demand before investing in content. In each case, the ad must land on a page built for it; see what a landing page is.
When SEO makes more sense
Any business that plans to exist in three years. Every month of SEO work builds an asset that keeps producing; every month of ads is rent. For questions people research before buying (costs, comparisons, how-to), organic content wins because people do not click ads to learn things. And for local businesses, the map pack, which cannot be bought in the same way, is driven by local SEO.
The two also feed each other: the data from ads shows which searches convert, which tells you which pages to write; and a site with strong content gets better ad quality scores and cheaper clicks.
